Betsy Garthwaite took the helm of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater organization at its Sept. 24 annual meeting from Anne Todd Osborn, who has been board president since 2013. Osborn is now vice president.

Also, six new members joined the board of directors, including Garthwaite. The other new board members are Bob Alpern, Jeffrey Domanski, Neil Gordon, Lucy Johnson and Sarah Underhill.

Garthwaite, facilities manager at the Ulster Performing Arts Center in Kingston, joined the Clearwater organization when she stepped aboard the sloop as a crew member in 1983, officials said. An environmental organization that dates back to the 1960s, Clearwater started offering river trips on the sloop, a 102-foot replica vessel, in 1969.

She became captain of the sloop in 1992, and served in that role until 1995.

"We're happy to have both Betsy and Annie leading the board of directors," said Dave Conover, interim executive director.

Conover praised Osborn's work overseeing the sloop's restoration, and Garthwaite's knowledge of the history of the organization and the Hudson River.

Garthwaite said she welcomes the challenge of continuing the environmental and educational efforts of the group.

"Clearwater has weathered enormous challenges over the past 12 months, and the outpouring of support from the organization’s members and the larger Hudson Valley community has been amazing," she said. "I welcome the opportunity, as Clearwater's next president, to lead the organization forward."
